The Transmission Valve Body

The transmission is responsible for providing a controlled application of power when and where it is required. This means that the transmission provides the appropriate power when each gear is manually shifted. The transmission will also give the power automatically if your Porsche has an automatic transmission.

With this system in mind, the transmission valve body is a maze-like control system that is in charge of diverting the transmission fluid to the correct gear. The transmission valve body is made up of pathways, valves, and solenoids, all of which the transmission fluid flows through to get to the proper destination. When the transmission valve body is damaged, the transmission fluid is unable to go where it is needed, leading to serious transmission issues.

Sign of a Damaged Transmission Valve Body

When the transmission valve body has become damaged, there are numerous signs that will alert you to this. One sign is harsh or delayed “garage shifts.” Garage shifts are when you put your Porsche into reverse from park or into drive from park. In this instance, a delay is considered two or more seconds.

This sign will commonly start out as only one delayed garage shift. For example, if you notice the delay when going from park to reverse, you should try to reduce the number of times that you are performing this gear shift. If the issues have progressed to include both instances then the transmission valve body damage has not been addressed.

Another sign to be aware of is incorrect shifting up or down. An example of this is if you are trying to get into a higher gear to have more power to get up a hill but your vehicle downshifts instead. This is a good indicator that the transmission valve body is damaged. The valves and pathways are not in a correct position so the transmission fluid is going to the wrong gear.

Gear slipping is another sign of a damaged transmission valve body in your Porsche. An example of the gear slipping is when you have just completed an upshift, but the gear immediately slips back down into a lower gear. The gear is not able to stay in the higher gear. When this issue occurs, it usually means that the transmission is not receiving enough fluid because it has been routed incorrectly or it could be leaking out somewhere in the transmission valve body.

One last sign that will point toward a damaged transmission valve body is an illuminated check engine light. Your Porsche has a computer that is constantly receiving signals from sensors all throughout the vehicle. If there has been damage to the transmission valve body, the computer will be alerted and tell you through the check engine light.
