  • When to Replace the Head Gasket in Your Mini

    MINI Head Gasket

Mini Coopers are powerful vehicles that offer superior performance. They might be small in stature, but they make a bold statement. Even though they are reliable, they are still known to have head gasket issues. Like any other vehicle, your Mini needs regular maintenance performed to keep it running smoothly. One of the parts that may cause Mini owners trouble is the head gasket. Let’s take a closer look at it in the article below.

    What is the head gasket?

The head gasket is a very important part of the engine. It is located between the engine block and the cylinder heads. Its function is to seal the cylinders so that oil and coolant do not leak into the cylinders. It also seals the engine so it doesn’t lose compression. However, it is prone to failure because it receives a lot of stress over time.

Newer head gaskets are usually made from steel. There are typically three layers. The center layer is thicker and is sandwiched between two thinner layers. The outer layers are coated in a rubber-like polymer. This rubber coating helps to protect the seal from the cylinder head and engine block.

Symptoms of a Failing Head Gasket

    Engine is Overheating

An overheating engine is never a good sign. A blown head gasket can allow gases to leak into the coolant or coolant to leak into the cylinders. This will lead to an overheating engine. Never drive your Mini if your engine is overheating. Doing so can cause further damage and possible engine failure.

    White Smoke

White, sweet-smelling smoke coming from your exhaust is a sign of a failed head gasket. When antifreeze is able to leak into the cylinders, it is turned to steam and released out of the exhaust, causing this white smoke.

    Blue or Gray Smoke

When oil enters into the cylinders, it will create a blue or gray smoke. The smoke will come out of your exhaust.

    Fluid Leaks

A failed gasket can lead to a coolant or oil leak. Never let a leak go unchecked. Low fluid levels can lead to engine damage. Leaking oil can also cause a fire, which is threatening to you, your passengers, and other drivers.

    Contaminated Oil

Having regular oil changes can help identify a head gasket issue. When oil and coolant combine, they form a milky sludge. This sludge can often be located on the dipstick or filler cap. When your mechanic is performing your oil change, they will be able to notice this issue right away.

    Noticeable Loss of Power

A noticeable reduction in engine power can be due to a failing head gasket. The gasket is allowing air and fuel to escape, which will cause a loss of power and a rough running engine.

    Car Won’t Start

When your head gasket has failed, your car may not start. The engine may turn over, but it will not ignite. This issue happens because the engine cannot build up enough compression.

    What should you do?

If you know that your head gasket is damaged, do not drive your Mini. Continuing to operate the vehicle can lead to additional damages including engine failure. If you are experiencing any of the above issues, call us immediately. Our certified technicians will be able to diagnose your problem and get it fixed.

Head gasket replacement isn’t considered routine maintenance. It is a major repair that needs to be performed by a certified mechanic. Since the head gasket is in the engine, part of the engine needs to be removed. This is a difficult and time-consuming process. Do not try to handle this repair yourself.
