Volkswagens are equipped with an O2 sensor that may develop problems over time. This sensor helps your Volkswagen run efficiently while also reducing the number of emissions being released into the environment. Below, we will dive further into the function of an O2 sensor and how to identify a faulty one in your Volkswagen.
The Modern O2 sensor
For several decades, specifically since the 1980s, all Volkswagens have been manufactured with an O2 sensor. This sensor is responsible for measuring the amount of oxygen within the exhaust.
The modern O2 sensor, or oxygen sensor, sends readings to the Electronic Computer Module (ECM) so that it can adjust the air/fuel ratio for the engine. The engine relies on a proper air and fuel mixture to continue running smoothly. When the oxygen sensor in your Volkswagen goes bad, it cannot properly adjust the mixture as needed.
The oxygen sensor is important in your Volkswagen, especially if you live in a state where vehicle emissions inspections occur. If one or more of the O2 sensors in your vehicle have ceased functioning, it is highly unlikely that your car will pass this inspection, rendering it unsafe to drive on the roadways.
Warning Signs of a Faulty O2 Sensor
When there is less oxygen present in the gasoline, fuel will remain after combustion. Experts refer to this as a rich mixture. However, when there is more oxygen present in the gasoline, it is referred to as a lean mixture.
A rich mixture does not allow fuel to burn off properly, creating excess pollution emitted from your Volkswagen. Whereas a lean air/fuel mixture creates nitrogen-oxide pollutants that lead to a decrease in overall vehicle performance and inevitably, engine damage.
With a faulty O2 sensor, you can expect your Volkswagen to exhibit some warning signs or symptoms. These may include:
- Illuminated check engine light: When your Volkswagen’s O2 sensor fails, it sends a signal to the electronic computer module. The ECM then recognizes a warning code, illuminating the check engine light and alerting the driver to an arising problem.
- Lowered fuel economy: When the O2 sensor is unable to regulate the air/fuel mixture, too much fuel may be sent to the engine. When this occurs your fuel mileage will begin to suffer.
- Rough idle: A faulty O2 sensor causes many problems within the engine, including causing it to idle roughly.
- Engine misfire: An imbalance in the air/fuel mixture caused by a faulty O2 sensor disrupts the normal engine combustion process resulting in a misfire. Engine misfires are more prominent at lower speeds.
