  • Expert Advice on Repairing the PCV System in Your Mini

    MINI Black Smoke From Tailpipe

Mini Coopers are great vehicles that provide high-performance fun and fuel efficiency. Their unique, compact design makes them stand out in the crowd. But to keep them in the proper running condition, they require regular vehicle maintenance. By staying current on your maintenance schedule, you can extend the life of the PCV system in your Mini Cooper.

    What is the PCV system?

The PCV system is also referred to as the Positive Crankcase Ventilation system. It is an emissions device that’s purpose is to move excess gasses out of the crankcase. The crankcase is the cavity below the cylinders. The positive crankcase ventilation system removes the gases and directs them to the intake manifold. Inside the intake manifold, the gases are burned.

The PCV system was designed to get rid of the problem of unburned fuel. Until then, the unburned fuel leaked from the engine causing damage to the inside of the car. The gases were also unhealthy and were a major cause of pollution. The positive crankcase ventilation system allows for the unburned fuel to be sent back into the engine to be reignited.

Symptoms that the PCV System is Not Working

When the PCV valve fails, the gases will not be moved to the intake manifold. The toxic gases are left in your engine system where they can cause damage and possibly complete engine failure. There are two ways that your PCV system can fail. One is filter failure and the other is valve failure.

    Signs of Valve Failure

A PCV valve that is stuck can mimic symptoms of MAF failure, another common failure in Mini Coopers. Below are some symptoms that you may experience if the PCV valve is stuck open or closed.

    • rough idling
    • engine oil in the valve
    • trouble starting the engine
    • poor performance
    • check engine light illumination
    • black smoke coming from the tailpipe
    • engine surges
    • excess oil consumption

    Common Symptoms of Valve Failure

These are the most common symptoms for PCV valve failure. If you notice these, bring your Mini in today for inspection and diagnostic testing.

    • oil leak
    • gasket failure
    • seal failure
    • increased internal engine pressure
    • engine misfires
    • moisture under the hood
    • oil in the MAF sensor
    • engine sludge build-up
    • a bad air-to-fuel ratio
    • contaminated filter

    Replacing the PCV Valve

The PCV valve rarely fails if you stay current on your regular maintenance schedule. They are a common repair item that should be replaced during every major service scheduled maintenance plan. The part is often scheduled to be replaced every 30,000-60,000 miles. Some vehicles require that the valve is changed more frequently due to excessive use.

PCV valves can fail early due to a lack of maintenance. Stay current on your oil changes to prevent sludge buildup on the valve. The sludge building will clog the valve. If the valve gets clogged, a replacement will be required.

PCV valves can also fail because of other engine problems. When you bring your Mini Cooper into our service center, our technicians will perform an inspection to make sure there is not an issue with the engine.

Can I drive with a faulty positive crankcase ventilation valve?

We do not recommend that you drive your Mini Cooper with a faulty PCV valve. Continuing to drive your vehicle can result in engine damage. You may also experience performance issues that can make driving more difficult.
